



The Story Behind The Stories
Derek P. Hassler is a musical theatre bookwriter and lyricist based in New York City whose work spans bold original stories, heartfelt human dramas, and inventive reimaginings of history. His recent projects include Somewhere In Between (music by Greg Woods), and The White Rose.
Earlier works include Queen of the West (music by Landon Braverman), which was awarded Best Musical at the Manhattan Theatre Mission Showcase; CHOICES (music by Landon Braverman), recipient of the Best Book Award at the West Village Musical Theatre Festival, a Ken Davenport Short Play Contest Finalist, and later featured in the National Asian Artist Project; and Last Resort (music by Helen Park).
Hassler’s songs and collaborations have been heard on some of the city’s most iconic stages, including Lincoln Center and 54 Below, as well as cabaret venues across the country in Chicago, Los Angeles, and beyond. His work has been showcased by institutions such as Prospect Theatre Company, The New York Theatre Barn, and The National Asian Artist Project, organizations known for nurturing bold new voices in American musical theatre.
A graduate of the NYU/Tisch Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, Hassler brings both a rigorous craft and an adventurous artistic spirit to every project. He is a proud member of ASCAP and The Dramatists Guild of America.
